Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage involves a firm pressure beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension and ache. The focus is on the deeper layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).
Chronic muscular tension usually results in adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation, causing pain, limited movement and inflammation. The deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore natural mobility.
A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that blood pressure fell after a single treatment. Additionally, a 2010 study in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that massage modalities, suh as deep tissue, reduce heart rate and cortisol levels (the stress hormone) while boosting mood and relaxation by triggering the release of oxytocin and serotonin.
Deep tissue massage is safe and widely used for pregnant women. Manual lymphatic drainage and baby massage is also offered.
